A three-part title
Many dissertations have a title in three parts, such as “Design and implementation of”, the main title in capitals, and a qualifier like “a case study in Nairobi”. This cover has separate fields for the top, middle and bottom lines so each can have its own style.
Fields
- Top title, main title and bottom title
- Date
- Author name and degree line
- University and department
- Supervisor
- Round photo and logo
Check before you print
Universities set precise rules for thesis covers: font sizes, binding margin, the wording of the degree line. Use this layout for drafts, proposals and projects, or when your department allows free design.
A title with room to breathe
Long thesis titles often split awkwardly across lines. Here the title is separated into three parts: a lead-in above, the main title and a closing line below. A title like The Effects of Remote Work: A Study of Mid-Sized Firms can then read in a logical order, with the main words set large.
Name, department and supervisor
Name holds the candidate, Department Name the faculty or school, and Supervisor the advisor, with academic titles if you use them. The photo is round and optional; add it only if your university permits an author photo. Add the university logo only if your handbook allows it.
Before you bind
Universities set rules for margins, fonts and sometimes the colour of the cover. Check them first; if bright yellow is not allowed on a formal submission, use this design for a draft or a personal copy. Print a trial page to see how it sits against the binding edge.
Choosing wording for the three title lines
Put the broad subject in the top line, the exact research question in the main title and the method or setting in the bottom line. Short lines read better than a single long one. Ask your supervisor to approve the final title before you print, since departments often register it exactly.
